Avondale Reading Room (March 2016)
We are in the process of creating a room in school to promote a love of books and the enjoyment of reading; and Phase 1 of this development took place over Half Term. Some beautiful new furniture was installed in one of our top floor classrooms and a delivery of new books appropriate for all ages is on its way. We are very appreciative to Avondale Xtra for sponsoring the project, with some particularly generous donations from Alexandra Nash, Sophie and Anthony Kingsley and the charity ‘Giveabook.org.uk.’ Thank you so much to everyone involved. Donations of books and money for books is still being given and we look forward to an official opening when the room is completely set up and the children can enjoy its use.

Update on the Egg (May 2015)

The giant egg has been removed from the roof of the shed. There has been a giant egg in the news this week (see posters below) and so there is speculation that our egg might be connected to this. Please ask your children for updates. Using the stimulus of the egg there has been some very high quality writing over the last two weeks – please look out for it on the website.

GIANT EGG (April 2015)
We were excited to return to our beautiful new wall and rebuilt shed in the Key Stage 2 playground on Monday; but a shock was in store. By Tuesday morning a giant egg in a sprawling nest had arrived on the roof. As I write this (Thursday) a crack has appeared so we are waiting with baited breath to see what will happen next. There has been much speculation by all of the children and there has been some amazing writing produced. Watch this space for more news…

He then worked with other classes, listening to poems and developing language. Many of the children, and staff, were inspired to become poets. (March 2015)

Peter Pan at Christmas (December 2014)

This half-term, the students of Year 5 have worked extremely hard to put on a spectacular performance for our Christmas Festival.  Our show, ‘Peter Pan at Christmas’, was a retelling of the classic story, but with some modern elements.

Putting on an amazing show like this takes a lot of work.  The auditions took place back in early October.  Children had to stay back after school two days a week for six weeks and had to miss a lot of their play times, but it was all worth it in the end.

Both parents and students were delighted with the amazing performance they did on the night and the Year 5 staff were so incredibly proud of all that their students achieved.  I’m sure this will be a positive lasting memory of their primary school years for a long time to come.  Take a look at some of these pictures from their performance.

Myths and Legends Day year 5 (October 2014)

Year 5 had a historian come to school to talk all about Greek myths and legends.  He has worked on our favorite television show – Horrible Histories.  He has also appeared in the films ‘Robin Hood’ and ‘Gladiator’.
Before he arrived, he emailed us a list of characters from Greek history and mythology.  We each chose a character and researched him/her and dressed up as them on the day.

In the morning, we learned how people in Ancient Greece wrote.  Chloe’s (Medusa’s) paper says Chloe, Avondale Park Primary School.

Even though we had read so many myths in school, we were excited that Steve had brought some myths with him that we had not heard of before.

We worked in small groups and acted out these myths for the rest of the year group.  They had to guess who was the hero, who was the villain, what was the moral, etc..

At the end of the day, we even got to hold a real sword and shield, similar to the type used by the fierce Spartan warriors in Ancient Greece.

We are extremely lucky to have received funding towards the garden from Avondale Extra – the charity which supports many of our trips and subsidises our clubs - and so a huge thank you to them!

Can I ask parents at the end of the day to ensure that their children walk only on the pathways (and not on the soil) and to remind them that this is a quiet space. Running and ball games are for the large playground, not for this area.

Meanwhile, enjoy! (May 2014)
